Chelsea closely watching £40m “monster”. He could be a Sterling upgrade

He is being monitored by multiple clubs, including the Blues, in preparation for the summer.

Since Todd Boehly’s acquisition of Chelsea in 2022, the Blues have developed a reputation for extravagant spending, spending in excess of £1 billion during his two-year tenure at Stamford Bridge.

Leading the club in the last couple of years with a number of high-priced acquisitions is winger Raheem Sterling, who joined for £47.5 million from Premier League rivals Manchester City in the summer of 2022.

The Blues placed great faith in the 29-year-old attacker to lead them to their first league championship since the 2016/17 season. In fact, they offered him a monstrous contract worth an astounding £325,000 per week, according to Capology, which would have made him the Blues’ highest-earning player.

The agreement has fallen short of expectations for both parties involved, as the forward has scored just 19 times in 81 appearances for Chelsea, which is equivalent to an average of one goal every 4.3 games.

The combination of his high salary and his poor performance may result in his departure from Stamford Bridge this summer. The club is also interested in acquiring a former City attacker who has excelled in 2023/24 as an enhancement.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are currently in competition with Liverpool to acquire Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville, following the Whites’ inability to immediately regain promotion to the Premier League, subsequent to the arrival of new manager Enzo Maresca.

The 22-year-old has established himself as an indispensable member of Leeds in the Championship, where he has scored 19 goals and provided nine assists. Despite losing 1-0 to Southampton at Wembley, the club narrowly missed promotion in the competition.

His 28 goals and assists this season place him third in the division in terms of most combined goal contributions; this number has undoubtedly piqued the interest of the Blues in advance of the summer.

Football Insider reported earlier this week that Daniel Farke’s squad will be in dire need of funds after losing the play-off final. The Dutch winger is reportedly available for approximately £40 million this summer.

Although Chelsea should exercise restraint in their summer spending, Summerville’s inclusion would be a tremendous asset and could potentially terminate Sterling’s two-year tenure at Stamford Bridge.

The Dutch winger has accumulated some outstanding statistics despite competing in a lower-tier division last year; many of those figures would be extraordinarily advantageous to Maresca’s squad should they prevail in the summer transfer competition for his services.

Summerville has averaged 2.5 effective take-ons per 90 for Farke’s squad in the Championship, which places him in the top nine percentile of English second-tier attackers.

When comparing the number of goals scored in the league this season between Sterling and Summerville, the Dutchman surpasses the Englishman by an astounding eleven goals, surpassing the current Chelsea forward.

Ben Mattinson, an analyst, has referred to the Dutchman as a “1v1 monster.” Due to his greater number of goals and assists, he contributes more per 90 minutes; therefore, the club should pursue a transfer for the Leeds player.

Although Cole Palmer has established himself in the starting lineup on the right flank, significant progress is required on the left side if the Blues are to contend for a Champions League berth in the coming season.

Summerville’s every metric indicates that he poses a significant threat in the final third, and the club is in dire need of reinvesting in new attacking personnel to close the gap left by the top four this season.
