Chelsea 4-4 Man City: Key stats from an instant classic
In this contest, both teams attempted 32 times; Manchester City had 15 and Chelsea had 17, with 19 of those attempts being on target.
Five matches in Premier League history, Everton v Leeds in October 1999, Charlton v West Ham in November 2001, Spurs v Reading in December 2007, and Liverpool v Arsenal in April 2009, were required to score four equalizing goals.
It was the first time since March 2008 against Spurs, Man City since January 1961 against Arsenal, and Chelsea since March 2008 against Spurs that both scored and conceded four or more goals in a league match. Furthermore, it was the first time the two teams did so in a league match since December 1956, when Man City prevailed 5-4.
In his 882nd match as a manager across all competitions, Pep Guardiola witnessed four or more goals scored and conceded by Manchester City in the same contest for the first time.
This was the twentieth occasion in 2023 that Chelsea trailed 1-0 in the Premier League. Alongside AFC Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, this was the joint-most times a team conceded the opening goal in the competition this year.
Erling Haaland scored his inaugural Premier League goal against Chelsea, bringing his total to 19 goals in 21 appearances against various clubs in the competition.
Haaland has converted thirteen of the fifteen penalties he has attempted for Manchester City across all competitions, for an 87% success rate.
Since making his debut for Borussia Dortmund in 2020, Erling Haaland has scored two or more goals in 36 league matches, more than any other player in the major five leagues of Europe.
Rodri surpassed his previous season’s total in the competition by achieving his third Premier League goal of the year. Nine of his seventeen Premier League goals have been game-winning for Manchester City.
Along with Teddy Sheringham, Dean Windass, and Ryan Giggs, Thiago Silva became only the fourth individual to score a Premier League goal at the age of 39 or older.
Manuel Akanji, who entered the club with one goal in his initial sixty appearances, has scored in each of his last three appearances for Manchester City.
In the Premier League, Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer became the eighth and ninth players, respectively, to score against Man City after having previously played for them in the competition. This follows Kelechi Iheanacho, Niall Quinn, Steve Lomas, Garry Flitcroft, Geovanni, Daniel Sturridge, Álvaro Negredo, and Sturridge.
Cole Palmer’s 94:24 goal was the most recent penalty goal scored by Chelsea in the Premier League since November 2013, when Eden Hazard converted at 95:18 against West Brom. Furthermore, it was the most recent goal scored from the spot against Manchester City in the competition.
