Buyout Bombshell: Cole Anthony to Join East Contender Milwaukee Bucks

A contract buyout has been reached between the Memphis Grizzlies and guard Cole Anthony, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The buyout makes it possible for the 24-year-old to sign with a team that is in the playoff hunt.

After Anthony clears waivers, the Milwaukee Bucks are anticipated to sign him. On Saturday night, officials from both the Grizzlies and Anthony met to negotiate the buyout.

Cole Anthony Expected to Join East Contender Following Buyout

Anthony’s Short-Lived Tenure in Memphis

As the Grizzlies looked for seasoned depth to complement Ja Morant, Anthony was traded to Memphis earlier in the offseason. Nevertheless, Anthony’s future seemed cloudy due to Morant’s full recovery, GG Jackson’s rise to prominence, and the team’s dedication to nurturing young guards such as Javon Small and Vince Williams Jr.

Rather than a burial on the bench, both sides opted for a clean break. For Memphis, the buyout clears additional cap space and allows more minutes for developmental pieces. For Anthony, it offers a chance to play meaningful basketball immediately.

Bucks Betting on Backcourt Depth

Giannis Antetokounmpo is the focal point of the Bucks’ roster renegotiation.
After an early departure from the playoffs last year, Milwaukee has made it a priority to bolster their scoring and depth in the backcourt. That is an ideal description of Anthony.
Last season, he was a powerful combo guard for the Orlando Magic, averaging 9.4 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game.
He was well-known for his intensity and ability to create his own shots.
The Bucks are putting their faith in his ability to come off the bench and make a big impact in high-pressure situations, despite his streaky shooting and defensive shortcomings.

What This Means for Both Teams

For Memphis, the move aligns with a longer-term vision of internal development and cap flexibility. The Grizzlies are clearly investing in their youth, hoping to return to contention with a retooled and resilient roster.

For Milwaukee, it’s a low-risk, high-upside signing that adds another offensive weapon for a team with championship aspirations. If Anthony meshes well with the veteran-heavy core, he could play a key role as a sixth man or scoring sparkplug in the postseason.

One thing is clear—Cole Anthony is getting a second wind in his career, and the Bucks hope it turns into postseason fuel.
