Breaking News: As the Premier League table is rearranged, Arsenal beat Liverpool by more points despite losing points
Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League title could be hurt this weekend because Everton was able to get their points taken away.
After Everton had their points reduction penalty lowered, it may be a little harder for Liverpool to win the Premier League title this season.
The Reds are currently on top of the table, two points ahead of Arsenal and one point ahead of the current winners, Manchester City. They still have 12 games to play. The next game for Jurgen Klopp’s team is this Saturday against Nottingham Forest. However, the progress made by their rivals across Stanley Park could have a direct effect on how this weekend’s game at the City Ground goes.
The Premier League originally docked Everton 10 points for breaking the Profit and Sustainability Rules. This put the Blues in another fight to stay in the league. The club did, however, appeal the decision, and on Monday, an independent review board said that Everton would lose only six points instead of ten.
The Premier League told football.london that Everton FC appealed the punishment it received on nine grounds, all of which had to do with the punishment itself and not the fact that the club had broken the rules, which it accepted. On two of those nine reasons, the Appeal Board agreed, and the original points deduction of 10 was changed to six. The new punishment starts right away, and the Premier League table will be changed today to reflect this.
Because they lost fewer points, Nottingham Forest dropped to 17th place in the league, with Everton moving ahead of them and Brentford to take 15th place. With the new table, the Nottinghamshire club has dropped from being in a pretty good spot to just one spot above the relegation zone.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s team will now have to fight hard for every point they can to stay in the Premier League. Their first game in this new role is on Saturday, when Liverpool comes to town. Last year, the Reds lost 1-0 at the City Ground, and earlier this season, Arsenal barely beat them there, even though former Red Taiwo Awoniyi scored late.
Last year, Manchester City lost two points at Forest, and Arsenal’s hopes of winning the title were dashed when they lost 1-0 to Steve Cooper’s team. It has been shown that the City Ground is not an easy place to get a win. After Everton’s recent run of good results, City and Arsenal will be hoping that this motivates Forest to take points away from Liverpool, who are still playing with an injury-plagued team that is held together by talented young players.
