BREAKING: Man United exiled man gets surprise England National team call-up as United defender Harry Maguire joins squad
Angel Gomes, an ex-Manchester United youth, has been included in Lee Carsley’s inaugural squad as the interim manager of England.
Angel Gomes, a former midfielder for Manchester United, has been granted his initial call-up to the England national team. The 23-year-old, who has been at Lille for the past four years, departed United in June 2020.
He was on loan at Boavista in the Primeira Liga during the 2020/21 season before establishing himself as a first-team regular at Lille. Gomes has since appeared in 117 matches for the Ligue 1 club and has been featured on three occasions this season. However, on August 17, he sustained a severe head injury during a match against Reims.
Gomes has been chosen to represent England in two UEFA Nations League fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, despite this. A number of other uncapped players, such as Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest and Noni Madueke of Chelsea, have also been included in the squad.
After Gomes was included, England Interim manager Lee Carsley stated, “Angel is highly technical and effectively manages the game with his skill and technique.” An exceptional attitude and a strong sense of determination. Excellent in terms of both technical and tactical proficiency. I believe that he is a player that will elicit a great deal of excitement from the audience.
Gomes rose through the ranks at United and made his first-team debut against Crystal Palace in May 2017. He became the youngest player to represent United since Duncan Edwards in 1953, and the first player born in the 2000s to appear in the Premier League, at the age of 16 years and 263 days.
In 2023, Gomes was a key member of the England team that emerged victorious at the European Under-21 Championships for Carsley.
The squad in its entirety is as follows:
Goalkeepers: Nick Pope, Jordan Pickford, and Dean Henderson
Defenders: Levi Colwill, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Rico Lewis, Tino Livramento, Harry Maguire, John Stones
Phil Foden, Conor Gallagher, Morgan Gibbs-White, Angel Gomes, Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer, and Declan Rice comprise the midfield.
Forwards: Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, Anthony Gordon, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka, and Ollie Watkins
