Manchester City’s pursuit of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite has encountered a significant setback.

The 21-year-old is anticipated to depart Goodison Park for a substantial sum this summer, as Everton endeavours to raise funds in the face of ongoing financial and ownership challenges at the Merseyside club.

Everton’s financial prospects may be improved by the sale of centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, who has become a transfer target for numerous Premier League clubs this summer, including Manchester City, which is managed by Pep Guardiola.

Branthwaite, who was unexpectedly excluded from Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the European Championship in Germany, appeared in 35 Premier League matches for Everton during the most recent campaign.

Before joining Sean Dyche’s first squad at Goodison, the defender played for Blackburn Rovers and PSV. This season, Branthwaite has made 41 appearances across all competitions and scored three goals.

In October, the Englishman extended his contract with Everton until 2027. However, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Tottenham, and Manchester City are reportedly interested in acquiring him following his exceptional performance on Merseyside.

It was reported in March that the 21-year-old’s development was being monitored by the Etihad managers. Manchester City believed that the defender exhibited similar characteristics to John Stones and was “intent” on maintaining a high level of competition within Guardiola’s squad.

It is possible that Manchester City will be unable to sign the Everton defender, as The Times has reported that Branthwaite has reached a personal agreement with Manchester United, which includes a weekly salary of between £150,000 and £160,000.

Manchester United must still negotiate a transfer fee with Everton, who are expected to demand approximately £70 million for the centre-back this summer.

Manchester City presently possess a variety of defensive options, including Ruben Dias, John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake, and Josko Gvardiol, all of which are at the disposal of Guardiola.

Last summer, the Sky Blues acquired Gvardiol from RB Leipzig for £77.6 million. The 22-year-old had previously achieved five goals and claimed the Premier League title during his first season at the Etihad Stadium.
