BBC acknowledges Troy Deeney’s praise for Everton
In the past, Premier League star Troy Deeney chose two Everton players to be on the “team of the week.” The player who scored goals and is now a BBC commentator was at Portman Road on Saturday to watch the Blues beat Ipswich Town.
Unai Emery and Michael Keane scored the goals that gave Everton their first away win since December.
Sean Dyche’s team could have won by a lot more if they had taken more of their chances, but a strong last 30 minutes kept the score from dropping to 2-0, which would have been dangerous after losses to Bournemouth and Aston Villa earlier in the season.
With a clean sheet and a beautiful goal, Michael Keane is likely to be in Deeney’s starting eleven.
The 31-year-old’s defense was great for Deeney, but the former Watford forward also praised Keane’s second goal of the season. “In the past few years, Everton fans have been pretty harsh on him,” he said. Away to Ipswich he was excellent; not one bad tackle, not once out of place, and what a goal. An amazing finish with his left foot, which is weaker.
Ashley Young is on Deeney’s team of the week with Keane. Young led the party with Keane after the game as the away fans celebrated the team’s first win on the road in 2024. Young has been getting a lot of praise for his recent play.
With his addition, three of Everton’s back five have played in Deeney’s last two teams. This includes Jordan Pickford, who was chosen after saving a penalty and keeping a clean sheet against Newcastle United. After a slow start, Everton has started to find the defensive toughness that was so important last year. This is when they were recognized.
When asked about Young, Deeney said, “Young was great at right back against Ipswich at 39 years old.” He played the whole 95 minutes and never got beat one-on-one. He just kept running and running. A show that showed how well he takes care of himself to keep playing at the highest level at his age.
