Aymeric Laporte criticizes Pep Guardiola’s transfer policy at Manchester City, saying, ” It’s what he says, but it hadn’t been like that.”
Laporte departed Manchester City in the summer following five trophy-laden seasons under Pep Guardiola’s defensive hierarchy. He had fallen from the hierarchical order.
Pep Guardiola consistently advises players who desire to depart Manchester City and can make a satisfactory offer to the club to do so. However, Aymeric Laporte has cast doubt on whether Guardiola adheres to this principle in the real world.
After five and a half seasons with City, Laporte retired in the summer, having fallen out of favor in the defense and frequently being asked to play left-back. After expressing discontent with his circumstances, he ultimately departed for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, as no European club was able to provide him with an exit route from Manchester.
Laporte, reflecting on the manner in which he left Etihad, asserted that he was not the only City player who did not fully benefit from the transfer policy that permitted them to depart voluntarily.
“That is his typical response. “While that may not have been the case for a number of players, I will not delve into such matters,” Laporte said this week on Radio Marca regarding Guardiola’s stance on transfers for dissatisfied players. “I made the decision to depart and achieved the ability to do so. Such is it.
“I, too, made that decision in the moment; based on my personal circumstances and my position at City, I believe it was the correct one.” It had been nearly two years since I began playing there, and I had accomplished nearly everything during that time. It was not the position I desired to play in.
Laporte stated that Guardiola’s rotation policy prevented him from exhibiting his finest work, citing his tenure as an alternative left-back as one of the reasons for his departure.
“It can be somewhat discouraging if you do not perform at your highest level for a period of one to two years,” he elaborated, adding that he plans to return to European football following his tenure in Saudi Arabia.
“Your endeavors are at your discretion. I was more accustomed to playing at the center back position than the flank. I would not precisely call this the ideal position. In addition, throughout the final three years of my tenure at City, they acquired a large number of center-backs, and it was time for me to depart rather than remain.
“I, too, was not a starter; I wanted to participate in every game because I am a very youthful or young player. My only desire was to participate further. There were a few things in Europe that brought me joy, but they were not sufficient to propel me forward, so I made the decision to move on to something else, disconnect slightly from Europe, and perhaps return with more vigor.
