Ashley Young says he wouldn’t play in one Everton spot even if Sean Dyche asked him to.

Ashley Young joined Everton on a free move, and the team only expected him to provide cheap backup at full back.

Not many people would have thought that more than a year after signing his first one-year deal, the veteran would be a mainstay on Sean Dyche’s first team.

As a result of circumstances beyond his control, he had to play in 31 Premier League games last season. So far this season, he has played six of their eight league games.

But he can fill any role because he is so flexible.

A joke about Ashley Young’s flexibility

Within a two-minute conversation with Everton’s official X account, Ashley Young was asked about his time with the team so far.

Plus, the interviewer couldn’t talk about that time without mentioning how versatile he has been, playing regularly at left back, right back, and on the wing multiple times.

Even in January, on a cold, well-lit night at Craven Cottage, he filled in at center midfield for a game.

But Young joked that there is one role he would never play, not even if the Everton manager asked him to.

He said, “Yeah, I’m fine playing anywhere.” I’ve played every position in my career except goalie, and I don’t plan to change that any time soon.

Inevitably, as you grow older, you learn the game and read it more. Especially when you move to full-back, like I have in the last few years, you start to learn the game and know your place on the field and where not to be.

Ashley Young has been let down by Everton’s bad choice of players.

Although the 39-year-old has been criticized a lot while playing for Liverpool, it is not his fault that he has been their only choice at left or right back for long periods of time.

Whatever the case, this should be a damning indictment of Kevin Thelwell, who has done amazing things to get stars in some roles while frustratingly ignoring others.

Young is their only other choice if Vitaliy Mykolenko is ever unable to play left back.

Additionally, the Toffees still don’t have a long-term replacement for Seamus Coleman at right back because Nathan Patterson has been hurt a lot since moving to Goodison Park.

And once more, Young is the first place to look for cover on this side.

This former Aston Villa and Manchester United player isn’t always steady, but he’s done great in tough situations and has even been in great form lately.

He earns it because he is just a victim of how versatile he is and how many injuries the club keeps having.
