Again, Otega Oweh comes through big as Kentucky beats Louisville.
Which player has scored the most points for the Kentucky Wildcats so far this season?
That’s Otega Oweh, a junior guard.
Six Wildcats players have scored at least 10 points per game in 11 games, and Oweh scores the most at 15.7 points per game.
The Kentucky Wildcats needed Oweh the most in the last few minutes of their game against Louisville on Saturday. He was quiet for most of the game.
With the Cats still ahead, Oweh made big plays and highlight-reel dunks that made the crowd go crazy at Rupp Arena. The Wildcats held off a tough Louisville Cardinals team and won 93–85.
In the last two minutes, Oweh got free with a steal and scored a powerful slam dunk at the basket. It was a slam dunk like the one he had in the first few minutes of the game. With just under two minutes left, it gave Kentucky an 81-74 lead.
With 1:20 left, Louisville’s J’vonne Hadley made a jump shot that made the score 83–76. Oweh then made a 3-point shot 10 seconds later to give the Wildcats a 10-point lead. Oweh scored five points in less than a minute, and the Wildcats were pretty much done with the Cardinals.
Louisville answered with a 3-pointer from Noah Waterman, but Oweh capped off a great last two minutes with a layup in transition after Louisville missed another 3-pointer, which led to a and-1.
Oweh made that free throw and then made another one for Kentucky’s 93rd and final point of the night. He had scored nine points in the last two minutes after only eight before that.
Oweh scored 17 points, gave out three assists, and stole two balls in 27 minutes on Saturday afternoon. Already this season, he has scored 10 or more points in all 11 of Kentucky’s games. This is part of their good start to the season. In 11 games, he’s also made 52.5% of his shots from the field, including 37.5% from three-point range.
It’s not the first time Oweh has done this. He made a lot of big plays in the end when Kentucky came back to beat Duke and Gonzaga.
For example, Andrew Carr (Duke) and Lamont Butler (Louisville) may have had better statistical games, but Oweh has always made big plays when Kentucky needed him the most.
