After the excitement of Liverpool vs. Chelsea VAR, the Premier League makes a big choice about the referee.
Referee John Brooks has been given another match on Merseyside after playing a big part in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday, which used a lot of video review. The official was really important in a number of important choices at Anfield. He or she will now be in charge of Everton’s home game against Fulham.
A big deal was that Brooks didn’t send off Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo early in the game, which was compared to the decision not to send off Wiliam Saliba for Arsenal the day before. He also took back a penalty that was given to Arne Slot’s team.
Brooks did give the Reds a penalty, though, for Levi Colwill’s hit on Curtis Jones with the help of VAR. Now, he’s in charge of Sean Dyche’s Toffees when they play Fulham on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
A lot of people thought that Brooks and the VAR team, which included Michael Oliver and assistant Nicholas Hopton, made the right calls during the Chelsea game. But Blues fans were upset that Jadon Sancho didn’t get a penalty kick after Trent Alexander-Arnold stepped on him in the box before Mohamed Salah scored the first goal.
When Colwill put pressure on Salah and he fell, Liverpool was also refused a penalty. Speaking as a co-commentator, Gary Neville said that Salah should have been sent off for what he saw as a dive, according to the Liverpool Echo.
In contrast, Jamie Carragher believed that Brooks and VAR were wrong to rule out the second penalty after Jones was brought down by Robert Sanchez. While Nicolas Jackson’s equalizer just after halftime gave Liverpool a scare, they still managed to win. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was later allowed after a VAR check at Stockley Park. Quickly, Curtis Jones put Liverpool back in advantage.
Today, the Reds play Arsenal in the Premier League. This comes after playing RB Leipzig in the Champions League last week. Senior PGMOL referee Anthony Taylor will be in charge of the upcoming game at the Emirates Stadium. Sam Barrott will be the fourth official, and Michael Salisbury and Darren Cann will be in charge of VAR.
On Thursday, Chelsea plays Panathinaikos in Greece. The next day, they host Newcastle in the first of two games in three days against Eddie Howe’s team. The referees for that game have now been chosen.
Referee for Arsenal’s loss to Bournemouth, Rob Jones, will be in charge of the game. Jones is also the fourth official and was the one who sent off William Saliba after first giving him a yellow card. Along with Ian Hussin, Jarred Gillet will be on VAR. In Saturday’s game between Arsenal and Chelsea, Gillett and Jones were on VAR and suggested that the Saliba situation be looked at again on the field.
