After Man City beat Rui Amorim, he sent a clear word to Man United about Viktor Gyokeres’s transfer.
Even though Viktor Gyokeres scored a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League, Ruben Amorim, the manager of Sporting who was leaving, wouldn’t entertain the idea of getting him for Manchester United.
Tuesday night in Lisbon was Amorim’s last game as manager of Sporting, and he really went out with a bang. At first, City played better and Phil Foden gave them the lead, but Gyokeres tied the game just before halftime, and that was the end of City’s chances.
Less than a minute after halftime, Maximiliano Araujo put Sporting ahead. Gyokeres’ strong penalties then sealed the win for the Lisbon club. Amorim started his talk after the game by praising the farewell he was given.
In his news conference after the game, he said, “Looking at the game, it was written in stone.” “When the score was 3-1, the other team missed a penalty.”
After thanking the fans, the question turned to Gyokeres and whether Amorim was interested in signing him for United. However, the Portuguese head coach made his feelings on this very clear.
“Gyokeres?” Amorim said, “I’ve already made peace with them (Sporting), and I’m not even going to joke about signing him for United.”
“Gyokeres is at a big club and now all he has to do is finish the season here.” Gyokeres has scored 20 goals for Sporting in 16 games this season.
Telling TNT Sports, Amorim said, “No, no no. That’s not funny for me. At this point, it was hard for me to leave; if I joke about that with your cameras, I’ll have trouble. I will honor the fact that this is my place and country. Viktor has to stay until the season is over. After that, his life may go somewhere else.
