A shooting occurred following a soccer competition in Winnipeg over the weekend, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old man.

The incident transpired in the parking lot of the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex on Waverly Street following the conclusion of the final games of the Canada African Cup of Nations on Saturday.

According to Winnipeg police, officers were dispatched to the complex at 11:47 p.m. to investigate a gunshot report. A man who was not responding was discovered in the parking lot. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but he was later declared deceased.

He has been identified as Mohamed Yusuf Abdullahi, a resident of Winnipeg.

Gode Katembo, a member of the executive board of the Canada African Cup of Nations, stated on Monday that he was inside the complex assisting with cleanup when he heard what sounded like pyrotechnics.

“I glanced over to observe the activity in a parking lot, but I did not observe any fireworks,” he stated. “I immediately approached, summoned all individuals present at the complex, and instructed them to enter the clubhouse.”

Police suspect that the attack was premeditated. No additional injuries were documented.

During a Monday afternoon news conference, Const. Dani McKinnon of the Washington Police Department (WPS) stated, “The general patrol officers spoke with a number of people on the scene very early on and established that the individual who did the shooting quickly left in a vehicle, and there was no belief of potential risk to the public at that time.”

Anyone who witnessed the shooting or has video footage is being requested to contact the homicide unit by the police. McKinnon stated that there were approximately 100 spectators at the game and urged individuals who possess information that could assist investigators to contact them.

“The investigators are required to verify all information, regardless of its size,” she stated. “It is of the utmost importance that you contact the investigators if you find anything that you suspect is suspicious.”
