Several England players removed their runner-up medals after receiving them from UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin in the aftermath of their catastrophic Euro 2024 final loss to Spain.

Upon obtaining their runner-up medals following the defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024, a number of England’s most prominent players promptly removed them.

The team guided by Gareth Southgate persevered throughout the tournament to reach their second consecutive European Championship final, securing victories over the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Slovakia in the knockout stages. Nevertheless, the Three Lions were unsuccessful, a situation that was reminiscent of the Euro 2020 final against Italy.

Spain’s Nico Williams scored the opening goal in the 47th minute, and England’s Cole Palmer levelled the score midway through the second half with a hard and low strike from the perimeter of the box. Regrettably, the nation’s year was not to be repeated.

In the final minutes of the match, Mikel Oyarzabal scored the goal that secured Spain’s fourth Euros victory. His clever one-two with Marc Cucurella secured a 2-1 victory for his nation. After the dust had subsided, the Spanish counterparts presented a guard of honour to the England team, which was devastated, as they ascended to receive their runners-up medals from UEFA President Aleksander Ceferinto.

The elite mentality of England’s stars was evident as they ascended to collect their medals, with several of them promptly removing them after missing out on the final. Palmer, the goal scorer, removed his medal before he had even passed the trophy. Additionally, Jude Bellingham, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kobbie Mainoo, Kyle Walker, and Southgate were observed to be removing their consolation honours.

Although not all supporters condoned the removal of England’s medals by their players, athletes frequently believe that finishing in second place is not a cause for celebration. In fact, several Three Lions players pursued the same course of action subsequent to their loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final, as did a few Manchester City players following their loss to Chelsea in the 2021 Champions League final.

England’s second consecutive Euros final loss was a difficult one for supporters to accept, following the heartbreak they experienced against Italy in 2021. Luke Shaw scored the opening goal for the Three Lions in the second minute of the match, but Italy levelled the score in the second half thanks to Leonardo Bonucci.

The two teams were unable to differentiate themselves during the extra time, which resulted in a penalty shootout. Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford all missed from 12 yards for the Three Lions, resulting in Italy prevailing 3-2 on spot-kicks. Thus, Italy would receive the trophy.
