What Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag whispered Kobbie Mainoo after Man United League Cup win last year has been revealed
Erik ten Hag didn’t have Kobbie Mainoo on the team when Man United won the League Cup last year. He went straight for him.
Erik ten Hag said, “You remember that well” when someone brought up his fight with Kobbie Mainoo after Manchester United won the League Cup last year.
Ten Hag put his hand on Mainoo and then shook hands with the youngster. His gold medal was around his neck. Ten Hag gave Mainoo a pep talk for 15 seconds and then slapped him on the head to stop it.
Mainoo wasn’t in the team because he was only 17 and had only played three times for United. What did Ten Hag tell him?
Ten Hag told the press before the game on Friday, “I remember what I said: your day will come. We are going to win trophies together, and your day is coming when you will be on the field.”
“This club and I are going there together. We are going to get better, and we are here to win titles. So enjoy this moment and learn from it. Now you know what you’re working for.
The first time Mainoo played for England was at Wembley on March 26, exactly one year and one month after the League Cup final. As long as he is healthy, he will play for United against Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final at the national stadium in 22 days.
Mainoo’s young career is coming to a head on the 26th. During the pre-season tour, on July 26, he hurt his ankle against Real Madrid in Houston. He came back and played his first game in the Premier League on November 26 at Everton. He was United’s best player that game.
Mainoo’s starting spot against Madrid showed that Ten Hag was getting him ready to play with the team from the start of the season. Ten Hag made it clear, “Yes it was the plan, it was the intention.”
“We thought he could do it, and we also thought he could quickly get used to high levels, so we had to put that off.” But that’s good for him and us.
“He showed that he can make a big difference for our team later in the season.” We’re glad we saw this right and that we have a player like him on our team.
“He can really contribute and be the player who can make us play the way we want to play.”
