Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum swapped the hardwood for the fairway this weekend as he hosted the 5th Annual Jayson Tatum Foundation Golf Tournament, a star-studded event aimed at empowering youth and investing in the next generation of community leaders.
Held at the prestigious TPC Boston golf course in Norton, Massachusetts, the event drew an impressive crowd of professional athletes, celebrities, business leaders, and supporters of the foundation’s mission. With crystal-clear skies and a competitive-yet-charitable spirit, the tournament served as more than just a display of golf skills—it was a celebration of community, mentorship, and hope.
From Courtside to Community Impact
Tatum, a three-time NBA All-Star and Olympic gold medalist, launched the Jayson Tatum Foundation shortly after entering the league. Inspired by his own upbringing as a young Black male raised by a single mother in St. Louis, Missouri, Tatum has always emphasized the importance of giving back. The foundation focuses on creating opportunities for underprivileged youth through scholarships, mentorship programs, educational initiatives, and health and wellness support.
“This is something that means the world to me,” Tatum said during the opening ceremony. “When I was growing up, I didn’t have a lot, but I had people who believed in me. Now that I’m in a position to help others, I want to be that person for as many kids as possible.”
A Golf Tournament with Purpose
The golf tournament has quickly become one of the premier charity events in New England. This year’s fifth edition exceeded all expectations, raising over $1.6 million in a single day—funds that will be used to launch three new initiatives in the coming year, including a financial literacy program for high school seniors, a STEM summer camp for middle schoolers, and a mental health awareness campaign targeting underserved communities.
Participants included a mix of NBA teammates, coaches, and high-profile friends of Tatum, such as Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla, NFL star Patrick Mahomes, actor Michael B. Jordan, and WNBA standout A’ja Wilson. Even Boston legend Paul Pierce made an appearance, sharing a few swings and laughs with the younger generation.
“The beauty of this event is that it blends fun with impact,” said Mazzulla. “You’re out here enjoying the game of golf, but you’re also contributing to something far bigger than yourself.”
Young Voices Take the Stage
One of the standout moments of the event came during the luncheon, when three beneficiaries of the Jayson Tatum Foundation took the microphone to share how the programs had changed their lives. Among them was 17-year-old Jordan Whitaker, who received a college scholarship through the foundation’s “Dream Big” initiative.
“I never thought college was in reach,” said Whitaker, who will attend Howard University in the fall. “But thanks to Mr. Tatum and this foundation, I’m the first person in my family to go. He didn’t just give me money—he gave me belief.”
Tatum sat nearby, visibly moved, as the crowd erupted into a standing ovation.
Beyond the Green: What’s Next for the Foundation
This year’s success is not just a milestone—it’s a springboard. According to foundation director Carla Mitchell, the funds raised will allow for a major expansion of the foundation’s footprint both in Boston and Tatum’s hometown of St. Louis.
“We’re entering a new phase,” Mitchell said. “Jayson’s vision is evolving. He wants to tackle deeper issues—things like generational poverty, access to quality education, and youth incarceration. These are not easy battles, but he’s committed.”
The foundation also announced a new partnership with Boston Public Schools to fund enrichment programs in after-school settings, focusing on arts, technology, and conflict resolution. Additionally, a community center bearing the Tatum name is set to break ground in St. Louis in early 2026, aimed at providing tutoring, recreational sports, and mental health counseling.
Tatum: “This Is Just the Beginning”
Despite the applause and accolades, Tatum remains grounded. “I know I play basketball for a living, but this—this is my purpose,” he said, pointing to the kids who gathered around him for autographs and selfies. “If I can change the trajectory of even one life, then I’ve done my job.”
As he prepared to take his final swing of the day, Tatum paused and smiled. “This is year five,” he said. “But I’m already thinking about year fifty. I want this foundation to outlive my playing days. I want it to be a legacy.”
