The Celtics will face the Grizzlies of Memphis in the opening game of the Las Vegas Summer League. Although the Grizzlies have played in Salt Lake City before, this will be the first summer game for the Celtics.
The Grizzlies’ Salt Lake Summer League record was 1-2. Following a 12–1 victory against Oklahoma City, they dropped close contests against Utah and Philadelphia. Fourteen players make up the Celtics’ roster: two benchwarmers, two draught picks, two undrafted players, and two returnees from last year’s squad. Jordan Walsh is back for his third year with the team.
Entering his second season, Baylor Scheierman shown glimpses of brilliance last year. The Celtics welcome back Miles Norris, a versatile player, after a half-season away.
It is also believed that the three draught choices will participate in Summer League for the Celtics.
It will be fascinating to see how Hugo Gonzalez, the Celtics’ lone first-round choice, contributes to the team this season during Summer League.
This season, the Celtics are anticipating the signing of two-way contracts with second-round picks Amari Williams and Max Shulga. Joining the Grizzlies in Summer League are nineteen players.
Their roster will include Cedric Coward, the 11th overall pick in this draft who was traded from Portland.
They will also have Javon Small, the 48th overall pick in the 2018 draft, on their roster.
Among them will be Jahmai Mashack, the 59th overall pick. All three of these players—GG Jackson II, the #45 pick in the 2023 selection, Jaylen Wells, the #39 pick in the 2024 draft, and Cam Spencer, whose draft rights were traded from Detroit on 07/06/24—started for Memphis in two of the three games in Salt Lake City and produced solid performances in those games. For the Celtics’ Summer League squad, Matt Reynolds will serve as head coach.
Reynolds joined the Celtics in 2015 to serve as their video coordinator. Since 2022, he has served as the club’s assistant coach.
Last year, the Grizzlies had Tuomas Isalo as an assistant coach. Isalo is the first coach from Finland to ever coach in the NBA.
The firing of Taylor Jenkins prompted the promotion of Iisalo to the position of interim head coach. He will be leading the Grizzlies’ Summer League squad after being named head coach.
