In a move that has sent ripples of excitement through the music world, Imagine Dragons have officially announced the release of a special anniversary album titled “Reflections (from the Vault of Smoke + Mirrors),” commemorating ten years since the debut of their dark, experimental sophomore record Smoke + Mirrors.
The upcoming album is scheduled to be released on August 16, 2025, exactly a decade after Smoke + Mirrors first hit the airwaves. Billed as a “deep dive into the shadows of their most misunderstood era,” Reflections will include a curated selection of previously unreleased tracks, demos, alternate versions, and remastered B-sides from the original Smoke + Mirrors recording sessions. The project aims to give fans a rare, intimate look at the creative process that shaped one of the band’s most divisive and artistic albums.
“We wanted to revisit that moment in time—those years were transformative, and this music has lived in the vault for long enough,” said frontman Dan Reynolds in an official press release. “Smoke + Mirrors was a really introspective, vulnerable album for us. ‘Reflections’ captures everything that didn’t make it to the surface—but still holds weight, still tells the story.”
A Second Look at a Complex Era
When Smoke + Mirrors was released in 2015, it marked a sharp tonal shift from the anthemic pop-rock of their breakout debut Night Visions. The album explored themes of doubt, isolation, and internal struggle, with a heavier and more experimental sound than its predecessor. Though it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and achieved commercial success, it received mixed reviews from critics, who described it as ambitious but incohesive.
Over the years, however, the album has earned a cult following among fans who admire its rawness and sonic risk-taking. Songs like “Gold,” “Shots,” and “Dream” have grown in esteem, and the album’s visual aesthetic—dark, mysterious, symbolic—has come to represent a more vulnerable chapter in the band’s history.
“People didn’t understand Smoke + Mirrors at the time,” guitarist Wayne Sermon said during a recent Instagram Live. “But we’ve always been proud of it. It was us wrestling with fame, with who we were becoming. A lot of what we created then never saw daylight. Until now.”
What’s Inside the Vault?
The Reflections album is set to include 15 tracks, with at least 7 previously unreleased demos recorded between 2013 and 2015. These include early versions of “Polaroid” and “I Bet My Life,” as well as songs that were scrapped before the album’s final tracklist was decided.
One of the new standout tracks, “Ashes to Ink,” is already generating buzz online after being teased in a 30-second clip on TikTok. The haunting ballad features stripped-down piano and Reynolds’ raw vocals, evoking the somber atmosphere that defined much of the Smoke + Mirrors era.
Fans will also find reworked versions of familiar B-sides like “Thief,” “The Unknown,” and “The Archive,” now presented in updated arrangements that incorporate new production elements recorded during the band’s current world tour.
More Than Just Music
The album release will be accompanied by a limited-edition vinyl box set, a behind-the-scenes documentary titled From the Vault: The Making of Smoke + Mirrors, and a fan Q&A livestream hosted by Apple Music.
The band also plans to launch a small “Reflections” pop-up experience in Las Vegas, their hometown, where fans can explore interactive exhibits showcasing handwritten lyrics, original studio instruments, and video journals from the Smoke + Mirrors sessions.
Additionally, Imagine Dragons have hinted at a one-night-only concert event in Los Angeles this fall, where they plan to perform Smoke + Mirrors in its entirety—along with selected tracks from Reflections.
Fan Reactions
Since the announcement, Imagine Dragons fans—often known as the “Dragons”—have taken to social media with excitement and nostalgia. The band’s subreddit lit up with discussions about the emotional significance of the original album and theories on what unreleased tracks may finally be revealed.
“This is such a full-circle moment,” one fan posted. “Smoke + Mirrors was the soundtrack to the hardest part of my life. I can’t wait to hear what they left behind back then.”
Another added, “It’s about time this album got the recognition it deserves. So hyped for Ashes to Ink!”
On X (formerly Twitter), the hashtag #ReflectionsVault trended for several hours following the announcement, with fans sharing artwork, cover redesigns, and lyrics from Smoke + Mirrors.
The Bigger Picture
Reflections comes at a time when Imagine Dragons are once again in the global spotlight. Their 2024 album Loom was both a commercial success and a critical comeback, and they’ve spent much of 2025 on an ambitious world tour that has taken them across North America, Europe, and Asia. The band has also been working on new material slated for release in 2026.
The decision to revisit their past—particularly such a complex and emotionally charged moment—speaks to the group’s evolving relationship with their own history. In many ways, Reflections is not just about celebrating the 10-year mark, but about reclaiming a story that was left unfinished.
“It’s like opening a time capsule,” Reynolds said in an interview with Rolling Stone. “Some of these songs bring back pain. Others bring back hope. But all of them feel like they deserve to be heard.”
What Comes Next?
With Reflections (from the Vault of Smoke + Mirrors) set to arrive next month, Imagine Dragons continue to challenge the boundaries of how artists engage with their archives and their audience. The band’s ability to evolve while staying true to their roots remains one of their defining strengths.
As the countdown begins, one thing is clear: the vault is open, and Imagine Dragons are
ready to let the light—and darkness—pour in once again.
