A Second Look at a Complex Era
When Smoke + Mirrors was released in 2015, it marked a sharp tonal shift from the anthemic pop-rock of their breakout debut Night Visions. The album explored themes of doubt, isolation, and internal struggle, with a heavier and more experimental sound than its predecessor. Though it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and achieved commercial success, it received mixed reviews from critics, who described it as ambitious but incohesive.
