As rumours about the NBA free agency heat up, speculation over LeBron James’s future with the Los Angeles Lakers persists.
Despite the lack of an official statement from James, speculation continues over the four-time NBA champion’s future beyond Los Angeles and his likely destinations.
Following the Dallas Mavericks’ free agency actions thus far, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon recently weighed in on James’ road to the Mavericks, a franchise that has been connected to him.
How LeBron James Could Join Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis in Dallas
During an appearance on ESPN’s “Get Up,” MacMahon expressed his opinion on the Mavericks’ potential offer to James and whether the transaction would be mutually beneficial.
“Is there a potential trade with the Mavericks to acquire LeBron?” You could type it up in the trade machine.
He stated that the Mavericks need only eliminate the rotation entirely. “Release individuals such as Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington.” Perhaps a Naji Marshall or Max Christie.
What is the matter? You are sacrificing three or four rotation players for a retirement tour that may involve pursuing rings, which is not a viable option for Dallas.
MacMahon further added that the move did not make sense for James, and a buyout would be his option.
“Now, why would the Lakers do that? That’s a great question.
I don’t have a good answer for that one. But yeah, that is the only path I could see for LeBron James to come join Kyrie, Anthony Davis, and a couple of his former championship teammates in Dallas.”
The Mavericks reportedly would only contemplate a buyout as a means of acquiring the NBA’s top scorer.
It is hardly surprising that there are ties to Dallas. Among James’s teammates are Kyrie Irving (2016) and Anthony Davis (2020), with whom he shared a title in 2020.
Speculation is further heightened by the link between James and his former colleagues.
Irving, who was instrumental in James’s 2016 NBA championship run for Cleveland, is still playing for the Mavericks after tearing his ACL in March of 2025.
Davis, James’ co-star during the Lakers’ 2020 championship run, was traded to Dallas in February 2025 as part of the blockbuster deal that brought Luka Dončić to Los Angeles.
Lakers Build Around Luka Dončić as James Weighs Options
James’ future with the Lakers came under discussion after the team’s moves signaled building the team around superstar guard Dončić.
The trade that brought the Slovenian star to Los Angeles marked a significant shift in the franchise’s direction, positioning the 26-year-old as the centerpiece of their championship aspirations.
Ahead of free agency, the 40-year-old exercised his $52.6 million player option, which also came with a cryptic message from his power agent, Rich Paul.
The Klutch Sports head honcho dropped a brow-raising message about evaluating what was best for the veteran, who remains firm on winning a championship (his fifth) as the main objective.
The Lakers superstar turns 41 this December, and despite battling Father Time, he has shown he remains a force.
He ended this past season averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 8.2 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.6 blocks in 70 regular-season games.
These numbers demonstrate that James continues to produce at an elite level even as he approaches his 22nd NBA season.
The Minnesota Timberwolves eliminated James, Dončić, and LA in the first round, even though they had a good 50-32 run.
The postseason loss proved the squad needs more than just their superstars to succeed.
Only time will tell if James will play for the Laker in the 2025-26 NBA season, as the franchise tries to assemble a championship-caliber group around the two.
All the talk over James’ future mirrors the bigger picture of the problems that NBA superstars like him are experiencing as they get older.
Old guards like James need to make the most of their time in the league before younger players emerge and championship windows close.
