If any Tennessee Volunteers fan went to sleep last night believing the draft was done for their team after Chaz Lanier’s 37th overall selection to the Detroit Pistons, they would have been mistaken.
The last pick in the draft, 59th overall, went to the Houston Rockets, who selected Jahmai Mashack.
Because the Memphis Grizzlies received the draft choice in exchange, the ex-Vol will continue to play for the Volunteers.
Since the league’s draft consists of two rounds, Mashack had the opportunity to live out a fantasy that very few people get to experience.
No matter what happens after this, he has had a fantastic life moment that nobody can ever take away from him. Alright, let’s move on to the basketball portion.
Many Vols fans are aware that Mashack’s new squad has Zach Edey, a former Purdue centre who Tennessee fans dislike, and with whom Mashack played college ball.
The former All-American averaged 21.5 minutes per game, 9.3 points per game, and 8.3 rebounds per game in his debut season with the Grizzlies. Mashack was draughted with the intention of becoming a defensive speciality.
And if he can keep working on his offensive game and figure out how to contribute more, it may be something that helps him stay on the team and in the league.
Irrespective, the fact that an NBA team gambled on him because of his potential and skill set is encouraging.
