The Dallas Mavericks have signed Kyrie Irving to a new contract, and whenever he recovers from his torn ACL injury, he thinks the team can challenge for the NBA title.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the athlete from West Orange, New Jersey, is planning to sign a three-year, $119 million agreement with the team instead of exercising his $42.9 million player option for the 2025-26 season.
On the books for the upcoming 2027–28 season is a player option.
Irving, 33, believes “in this team’s ability when he’s healthy and whole again, potentially in January, February and beyond, to compete for a championship,” Charania said Wednesday on SportsCenter after speaking with Irving.
With Dallas expected to take Duke phenom Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick in Wednesday’s NBA Draft, Dallas could feature a “Big 3″ of Irving, Anthony Davis and Flagg going forward.
On Wednesday’s “Get Up,” former NBA player Markieff Morris stated, “Of course, that’s a championship-level team.” “In terms of the Western Conference, I’m going to pick Dallas as Oklahoma City’s greatest rival,” he continued.
If they’re all good to go, they’re a tremendous benefit when we see them.
When you consider the starting five and the bench players like PJ Washington and Naji Marshall, it’s hard to imagine a stronger squad, provided they stay healthy.

Of course, the Western Conference isn’t going to be easy for Dallas, which made it to the Finals in 2024 with Luka Doncic, because it features the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Denver Nuggets, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Golden State Warriors, and a revamped Houston Rockets squad with Kevin Durant.
There are many that hold Dallas in high esteem, not merely Irving. Irving will recover strongly from his ACL injury, according to Kevin Boyle, who has coached four first-round NBA draft picks, including Irving and Flagg.
Boyle also thinks Flagg will continue to improve as his career continues.
Because of his character, I have faith in Kyrie’s ability to recover and once again perform at a high level.
In a phone chat, Boyle revealed that he may see five of his former players selected in the next draft. Especially considering how quickly he’s played; he’s quite cunning. I have faith in his ability to overcome this injury and continue playing at a high level for many more seasons because of his game.
I suppose that will require an entire season, but it would be intriguing. Flagg, who is 6-foot-9 and could be the second-youngest first-round pick (after LeBron James), was Duke’s best player in every offensive category.
On Wednesday, he might be one of four first-round picks from the 2023–24 Montverde (FL) Academy team, on which he played.
There’s no question in my mind, Cooper is going to end up having a terrific NBA career,” Boyle said. “I think, off the bat, he’s young, it’s going to take some time to get to that incredible stardom status.”
Boyle predicted that Flagg might start out averaging something like 18 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists “and then grow those numbers.”
“And I think he’ll become a better and better scorer each year. And I think he’ll grow from that 18-19
