Celtic Connection : Former Guard Becomes Mavericks’ Hope in Kyrie Irving’s absence due to injury

In Boston, Kyrie Irving does not have many friends.
This has persisted for a considerable amount of time following the conclusion of his career with the Celtics.

When a player makes a public declaration of wanting to be a lifelong supporter of the team, then signs a free agent contract with a division rival, fans find it difficult to forgive them.

When Kyrie Irving signed with the Brooklyn Nets in 2019 after leaving the Boston Celtics, he did just that.

Malcolm Brogdon Emerging as Potential Irving Injury Replacement

We all know how the start of Kyrie’s tenure in Dallas played out. Doncic is a Laker, and Irving is coming off a torn ACL, which could impact his availability for the start of the 2025-26 campaign.

Now, Irving may need help from a former Celtics guard to help carry the load while he is sidelined.

According to Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.com, veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon is on the radar of the Mavericks’ front office as a potential fill-in for Irving while he works his way back to the court.

After appearing in 24 games for the Washington Wizards this past season, the former University of Virginia standout is an unrestricted free agent and will not be returning to the nation’s capital.

In his one season with the Celtics, Brogdon averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while playing 26 minutes per game.

He was named Sixth Man of the Year that season, and Celtics fans still remember him fondly from his time in Boston.

will be 33 years old this season, so it’s hard to see him having much of an impact in Dallas if he signs with the Mavericks.

Maybe his career decline won’t be as dramatic as that of other point guards in recent years, given that his game was never based on athleticism.
