In a bold commitment to education, community investment, and the future of sports leadership, the Detroit Red Wings have announced the launch of the “Wings for the Future Scholarship Fund”—a multi-million dollar initiative aimed at supporting students across Michigan pursuing careers in sports, health sciences, media, and community development.
The fund, which will begin distributing scholarships in the fall of 2025, represents one of the most ambitious academic investment programs by a professional sports team in recent NHL history. The Red Wings, in partnership with the Ilitch Charities Foundation and local universities, will provide financial assistance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to hundreds of deserving students annually.
A Vision for Education and Opportunity
At a press event held at Little Caesars Arena, Red Wings Governor and President Chris Ilitch unveiled the initiative alongside team executives, alumni, and student representatives.
“This scholarship program is more than just financial aid,” Ilitch said. “It’s a symbol of our belief in the potential of Michigan’s young people. Whether they dream of working in sports medicine, community outreach, or digital media, we want to help them get there. Hockey has always been about teamwork—and now, we’re extending that principle to support our future leaders.”
The “Wings for the Future” fund will begin with a $5 million endowment and will offer need-based and merit-based scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $15,000 per academic year. The program will prioritize students from underrepresented backgrounds, first-generation college students, and residents from underserved communities in Detroit and surrounding areas.
Partnering with Colleges and Communities
To ensure accessibility and maximize its impact, the Red Wings have established scholarship partnerships with several Michigan colleges, including:
- Wayne State University
- University of Michigan–Dearborn
- Michigan State University
- Oakland University
- Henry Ford College
Dr. Kim Reeves, Vice President for Student Success at Wayne State, praised the Red Wings’ vision. “This program opens real doors for students who might otherwise struggle to finance their education,” she said. “It’s a true game-changer—not only for individual students but for the future of Detroit’s professional and civic workforce.”
In addition to tuition support, the scholarship recipients will gain access to summer internships with the Red Wings and Ilitch Holdings, leadership workshops, and exclusive mentorship opportunities with team staff and industry professionals.
Student Stories: A Glimpse of What’s to Come
Among the first recipients of the scholarship is Jalen Parker, a sophomore majoring in Sports Communications at Oakland University. Raised in Detroit’s Brightmoor neighborhood, Parker said the scholarship is helping him stay in school after his family faced financial difficulties.
“I grew up watching the Red Wings on TV with my dad,” Parker shared. “Now I’m interning with their media team and working toward my degree. This scholarship means everything to me—it’s proof that hard work and community support can really change your life.”
More Than Hockey
While the Red Wings are a pillar of Michigan sports culture, this scholarship initiative is a reflection of their growing identity as leaders in civic engagement. The fund also aligns with the NHL’s broader mission of promoting diversity and inclusion in the sport.
Danielle Briggs, Director of Community Engagement for the Red Wings, emphasized that the scholarships are part of a larger goal. “This isn’t just about hockey. It’s about building healthier, smarter, more connected communities. We believe sports teams have a responsibility to uplift the cities they represent, and that’s exactly what this fund aims to do.”
Briggs added that the Red Wings are working closely with Detroit Public Schools to identify and support high school students with potential for college and careers in the sports ecosystem—whether as athletic trainers, event planners, or nonprofit leaders.
Looking Ahead
The Red Wings plan to grow the fund over time through donor partnerships, merchandise sales, and special charity events. Already, several alumni, including Henrik Zetterberg and Darren McCarty, have pledged donations and agreed to serve as mentors.
To kick off the campaign, the Red Wings will host a special “Hockey for Hope” gala in September 2025, with proceeds directly supporting next year’s class of scholarship recipients.
