NORMAN — In a major boost for Oklahoma Sooners softball, former standout catcher Sophia Nugent has announced her decision to return to the program. Nugent, the reigning SEC champion and USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, spent the 2025 season with Tennessee after transferring from OU but will now rejoin Patty Gasso’s squad for the 2026 campaign.
Nugent was a key contributor for the Lady Vols, batting .303 with 14 home runs and 51 RBIs while helping lead Tennessee to the Women’s College World Series. Her clutch hitting, including a game-winning two-run homer against Oklahoma earlier this season, showcased her elite power and poise.
“Coming back to Oklahoma feels like coming home,” Nugent said. “This program and these fans have always been family to me, and I can’t wait to help bring another championship to Norman.”
“Sophia is one of the most dynamic players in the game, and her leadership will be invaluable, having her back in our lineup changes everything for us.”
Nugent’s return solidifies Oklahoma’s lineup as the Sooners look to reclaim the national title after falling short in 2025. Her experience, power, and defensive prowess behind the plate make her an immediate difference-maker for a program that continues to reload at an elite level.
