The AP Top 25 Poll once again doesn’t give Kentucky women’s basketball enough credit.

The Kentucky women’s basketball team keeps being the best on the court. As of last week, they had beaten two teams by more than 30 points. One of those teams, Purdue, was from the Big 10. The Lady Cats look like they are only getting better. The only time they lost was on the road against a 16th-ranked North Carolina team. UK women’s basketball will stay ranked 16th in the AP Top 25 Poll for another week.

North Carolina may be partly to blame for the fact that Kentucky keeps getting low marks in the AP Poll. After losing to Georgia Tech, North Carolina dropped from 16th to 19th.

Another problem is that there aren’t many top teams playing each other right now. In fact, only a few of the top 15 are making it through the early schedule without losing or winning badly. Only eight of the top 15 teams have lost one game. Five of them still haven’t lost. Doing the math in your head, you can see that there are two teams above Kentucky that have lost twice. Duke and Notre Dame are those teams. Duke has also lost to two #1 teams, South Carolina and Maryland. The Fighting Irish have lost, though, to both ranked TCU and an unranked Utah.

The Notre Dame team is still ranked #3 in the country. Why is that? Most likely because they have also won three top-5 races in the past. They are getting a reward for having one of the toughest basketball schedules for women.

If the Kentucky women’s teams were higher, they should be, but until they start playing in conferences, Kentucky might stay around 15.
