The main issue for the people in charge of the 2025 Tour de France
It looks like the 2025 Tour de France will be interesting. Most likely, all of cycling’s biggest names will be there again: Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Primoz Roglic, and Remco Evenepoel. But the Grande Boucle will also have a big problem.
The race has already said where it will go. Almost everything is ready for the Grand Départ in Lille in July of next year. But there is still the matter of the wildcards. Since Julian Alaphilippe and Tom Pidcock were signed by the Tudor Pro Cycling Team and Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, this is now a very heated fight.
In 2025, the Tour de France will give away two “wildcards.” In addition to the two teams already stated, the Tour de France will also have TotalEnergies (French team) and Uno-X Mobility, which was one of the best teams in 2024 thanks in large part to Jonas Abrahamsen. Because of this, the Tour de France organization will have to make a tough choice when they have to choose just two of these four teams to compete in the race in 2025.
TotalEnergies might be the first one to be thrown out. However, even though they are French, Grand Tours has been known to refuse to invite teams from their own country. For example, Burgos BH did not get picked to ride in the Vuelta a España in 2024. Also, ASO-FDJ, Cofidis, and Arkea-B&B Hotels are just a few of the French teams that are already set to be in the Tour.
French stars won’t be as common, though. That’s why Tudor seems likely to still be in the race. Julian Alaphilippe, the star of French cycling, will be racing for the first time at the Swiss team in 2025. As one of the most successful and well-liked French riders of recent years, he alone could persuade them to invite Tudor.
Alaphilippe’s Tudor is most likely to get one offer, and Q36.5 or Uno-X will likely get the other. Should Tom Pidcock’s new team be in the Tour de France for Q36.5? It’s true that the Brit is a star, but maybe not enough to take a spot away from the Norwegian team, which has won a lot of praise over the last two years for its performance in the biggest cycling race of the year.
