Robinson says that losing to Clemson is a step towards winning the National Championship.
No one from Kentucky’s team or coaching staff seemed upset about the loss to Clemson. They talked about what went wrong and how to keep their minds on the next game and the end goal. In his thoughts after the game, Jaxson Robinson talked about the National Championship, which was the season’s main goal. He said that the loss to Clemson was just one step towards that goal.
When asked what the mood was like in the locker room after Duke lost to Clemson, Jaxson made it clear by saying:
“Everyone is still sure of themselves. Our season isn’t over after one loss. We want to win the National Championship in the end, and this is just one step towards that goal. We just need to get better and go home.
Robinson has a point. In the history of college basketball, only seven teams have gone perfect and won the national title. In 1976, the Indiana Hoosiers were the last team to do it. Five teams went undefeated during the regular season but lost in the NCAA playoffs. You may remember that Kentucky did the same thing in 2015 and lost in the final four.
This means that almost all of the teams that have won the national championship in recent years have lost games during the regular season. Teams will lose games during the season. Some coaches will say that even though they don’t want to lose, a loss can help them learn more about their team and get them ready for future stresses.
This is where Kentucky is now. If they want to win the national title, they need to learn how to play in tough situations during big games. This was given by Clemson, and Mark Pope didn’t even need a whole day to figure out what it showed about his team. He told the press after the game that when things went wrong, some of the guys lost it and tried to “fix things” on their own instead of believing the system and each other.
After that, he said, “There were so many places where we could have worked better like us.” They played us really hard in a scratch-and-claw game, and we left a lot on the table tonight because of the choices we made. We’re still not sure how to play through that, but we need to do it quickly.
The next team on the path to the final goal is Gonzaga. They have the toughest schedule in all of basketball. By the time the playoffs comes around, Kentucky will have been through a lot.
