Manchester United
It’s so bad that I’ll have to stop taking my kids to the game.
Among the anger, there was a clear sign of what this was all about. There were protests outside of Old Trafford today before Manchester United and Everton’s Premier League game because ticket prices are going up.
United made a lot of people angry this week when they said they were going to raise matchday ticket prices to £66 per game, with no discounts for kids or seniors.
There was a big group of Reds’ fans who put up a banner that said “stop exploiting loyalty.” The Glazer family and the new minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, were both the targets of angry and rude chants.
Three young fans made their way to the front through the noise and red smoke bombs. The sign they were holding up was made out of cardboard and said, “Man Utd – ripping off kids.” There was a fan who ran up to them and pointed at them while the fans sang “£66, you’re taking the p**s.”
They were not far from Red Ross Jenkins, 41, from Sale, who had been there his whole life. In his arms was his eight-year-old son William. He had a sign too. “It’s my fault, so charge me more,” it said.
Ross doesn’t have a season ticket, but he has been a member of “One United” for a long time and often goes to games with William and his brother.
He did say, though, “Overnight we were priced out of tickets.” I agree that prices will go up sometimes. But getting rid of a child’s price is disgusting.”
Ross said that he couldn’t afford to take his kids to the game without lower prices, and he would not go either if they couldn’t.
He told her, “It breaks your heart.” “As a dad, it’s something you look forward to and enjoy doing.” I’ve always thought it was important to take them to live sports games instead of just watching them on TV.
“And how can Manchester United stay in business without these young fans? They are the club’s future.” It’s really sad.” He also said, “If they can’t go, I won’t go.” “‘I’m also thinking of asking for a refund for my membership.”
The 49-year-old Anthony Talbot and his 11-year-old son Finn from Wythenshawe have season tickets that will not be changed at this time. But they said they thought all fans should “take a stand” against the choice.
Antony said, “They are taking the piss.” “They are keeping young, poor fans from going to the club.” For instance, a dad with three kids who wants to bring them will have to pay around 300 quid. Before you move, eat, and do everything else.
“Those costs are too high for most people to handle.” Supporters are being pushed out. It’s like they only want business fans in the stands, where it will die out.
A 42-year-old man from Northenden named Alex Sinau was at the game with his 10-year-old son Eitan. He said, “It’s terrible.” I already have a season pass, but I need to get my son a ticket. And going from about 15 pounds to 66 is a huge change.
“My daughter isn’t interested in football yet, but it would cost a lot of money if she did want to come.” I’m very mad. The younger age and kids are being pushed away from football instead of being drawn to it.
Another banner said, “Local lad Sir Jim charges £66 for OAPS+Juniors.” It was aimed at Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who was born in Failsworth. Don’t take advantage of trust.”
“Manchester boy, you’re having a laugh” and “you’re not one of us, you greedy ****” were chants that fans yelled at Sir Jim. They also made fun of the Glazer family and told them to sell the club for good.
The 1958, a group of United fans, planned the protest. The club’s spokesman, Steve Crompton, told the Manchester Evening News that he was “utterly disgusted” when he first heard about the planned price hikes.
“That is a complete shame. Nobody has been contacted; they just said, “This is what we’re going to do.”…” It looks like this is Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s way of “putting the Manchester back into Manchester United.”
I’m going to guess that he’s smart since he’s made a lot of money in his life. He knew what we agreed to. If things are so bad that he has to punish football fans in this way, then things are really broken.
“I have spoken to three or four supporters clubs who are worried about closing,” Steve said more. “They depend on coaches being full to the game, and if they can’t do that because people can’t afford tickets, they will die.” Fans who go to games are getting in trouble, it’s not fair.
When asked if he thought the club might change their mind because of how angry people were, Steve said, “Probably not.” “But are we going to keep fighting?” Of course. Together with other Premier League teams, this is the start. We are stronger when we work together, and our voice will only get stronger.
David Fehily, 61, an Everton fan, and Dave Kelly, 66, the chair of the club’s fan advisory board, were two Blues who came to show their support for the effort led by The Football Supporters Association.
“We believe this isn’t a club-by-club issue, this is a national issue” he said. “Everton is different because we have a lot of middle-aged and older people who this would affect.” We need to stick together.
