Manchester United
This week, Ruben Amorim will do things at Manchester United to bring in wing-backs, score goals, and make people feel better.
As soon as he got to Carrington on Monday at 2:30 p.m., Ruben Amorim got to work as Manchester United’s new head coach. There may not be many people around during the first week of an international break, but Amorim knows there is not much time to lose.
His first game is on November 24, but the non-internationals got to meet their new boss yesterday. They will have a few days off this week before their next game. Amorim will be getting used to his new home before the work on the exercise fields really gets going next week.
After Erik ten Hag was fired, the club has had a good couple of weeks, but finishing 13th in the Premier League and 15th in the Europa League still says a lot about where they are.
United has been having a rough time lately, both on and off the game. This week looks like it will be pretty calm, but Amorim still has a lot to do before things really get going.
Find his wing-backs.
Before leaving his job as manager of Sporting CP, Amorim told the press that his preferred back three system would be going to Manchester with him. There are people he needs to find in order for it to work.
United’s team seems to have a lot of players, even if not all of them are good. Who Amorim picks at fullback is what really interests us.
These full-back spots have been filled by Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui so far this season, with one of them playing on the left instead of the right. Since Amorim likes his wing-backs to give his team width, that probably won’t happen again.
One of those two could get the job on the right. Amorim will wait on the left side for Luke Shaw or Tyrell Malacia to get back to full health. At wing-back, he could try Amad or Antony out.
Fix up his goal scorers
From where will the goals come? That’s been a question for United all season, and it will stay that way if Amorim’s method requires at least one winger to be taken off.
Victor Gyokeres has been very important to him at Sporting, and he has helped the Swedish player. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, who play No. 9, need to trust him more if they want to follow his lead.
And Amorim needs to find a way to include either Alejandro Garnacho or Marcus Rashford. He also needs to boost the trust of both of them.
Look into injury issues
Amorim’s injuries are getting better just in time, but they’ve been a problem for United since the beginning of last season. Whether it’s just bad luck or because of too much work, he needs to figure out why these things keep happening.
People thought he would bring an exercise coach from Sporting with him, but it hasn’t happened yet. For now, he has to work with the medical team that is already there to make it stronger.
Make people feel better
He likes being around other people. Not only the players and fans at Sporting, but also the people who worked there, went on a trip with him.
He needs to quickly get the people who work for United to support him too. This year, the club’s staff confidence has taken a beating. 250 people were let go, and cuts were made all over the building to try to save money.
Most of the staff fans United. They’d be happier if they weren’t seeing friends and coworkers who work hard lose their jobs while the team plays poorly. If Amorim can get things moving, he will quickly make everyone feel better.
