Supporters of Manchester United are calling for the fan share plan to be put into action again.

A loud group of Manchester United fans has asked the club to bring back plans for a fan share program.

The club just hired a new manager, Portuguese Rúben Amorim, who will start at Old Trafford next week. In June 2021, the club mentioned the possibility of a fan share plan, but the matter has been unresolved since then.

As a first step, executive co-chairman Joel Glazer met with the club’s Fans’ Forum on June 4, 2021. It was his first time on the Fans’ Forum since becoming club owner 16 years ago.

As he opened the meeting, he told the fan representatives about his plans for the club and how he planned to spend in Old Trafford and the training ground.

Since then, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has bought a 27.7% stake in the club for £1.3bn. This has brought new money to improve the playing group and plans for a new or redeveloped Old Trafford, but the fan share scheme has stopped moving forward.

News from Sky News says that the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) has written to Joel Glazer, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and the club’s new CEO, Omar Berrada, asking them to use their plans for a new stadium or a redesign of Old Trafford to start the fan ownership project.

It says that the MUST letter refers to talks it was having with a crowdfunding platform that would help put in place a fan share scheme “on a much larger scale than was previously thought, speed up its execution, and almost certainly lower the costs the club would have to bear.”

Sky says that people who know the club well say that a fan scheme is not likely to happen until the plans for the stadium and the money needed for them are clear.

Reports say that the MUST letter said it had made a “in-principle agreement” with United to create a “F class” of fan shares that would have 10 times the voting rights of the Glazers’ B-shares.

People who bought F-shares were told that the money they got would only be used to invest in infrastructure or fan-related projects, after consulting with the Fan Advisory Board.

As of a certain date, the club would give one free share to all season ticket holders, facility holders, and official club members. This was done to get this important group of fans on board and build momentum.

“As the club looks at its stadium funding options, we believe that equity in the form of the FSP and possibly a wider share offer to investors is by far the best choice for our football club and its fans.” As the people in charge of this great club, we hope you agree.

Manchester United has chosen not to say anything.
