In Alabama, the Alabama Sports Writers Association is a professional group for sports writers and editors across the state. It is also open to anyone who works in sports information or publicity in Alabama, such as sports information staff, publicists for professional organizations or facilities, or publicists for non-profits that sponsor or run sporting events. This is a non-profit group called ASWA.

As part of its job, the ASWA prep committee regularly ranks the top 10 teams in a number of high school sports and also chooses all-state teams in those sports. The group will pick the winners of several yearly awards, such as the Jimmy Smothers Courage Award and the Mr. Football winner.
