Manchester United was not pleased with how the Sky Sports reporter treated Ruben Amorim.

Fans at Manchester United are angry about how Sky Sports News reporter Gary Cotterill treated new boss Ruben Amorim.

It was made official last week that the Portuguese boss would be the new head coach of the team.

Because of this, the world’s sports media are naturally interested in the manager of Sporting Lisbon. However, he won’t become United’s head coach until after his present team’s game against Braga on Sunday night.

Last night’s 4-1 loss to Manchester City was the best way for Amorim to say goodbye to his home fans. However, an English reporter’s strange line of questioning during his pre-game press conference also made headlines.

There was a story in The Daily Mail that Manchester United were unhappy with how Sky Sports News reporter Gary Cotterill treated their new head coach Ruben Amorim on Monday in Portugal.

“Cotterill asked Amorim several times to answer a question in English at the press conference for his last home game as Sporting Lisbon manager, a Champions League match against Manchester City. The 39-year-old and his press officer told Cotterill that he would only speak in Portuguese.”

Amorim has been happy to answer questions in English in the past, but he thought that since this was his last European press conference for Sporting in Portugal, he should speak the language of the country.

Strangely, the Sky Sports reporter couldn’t understand this and told Amorim, “it’s like giving the cold shoulder to all your English fans.” This was said even though Amorim had already talked about his move in English and will likely do so again in a week when he is officially introduced as the new head coach at Old Trafford.

“There is no sign that United will officially complain to Sky Sports, as the club is said to have a good relationship with them. However, sources told Confidential that there was some disappointment at Old Trafford over the “hostile” behavior shown by the main Premier League rights holder toward Amorim.”

The reporter has already had a run-in with one of United’s managers. After seeing United play Crystal Palace in the last game of the 2021–2022 season, he kept asking Erik ten Hag for a statement and had to be moved out of the way by the Dutchman’s bodyguard.

It was a very strange moment that made me think Sky Sports was trying to stir up a small problem. It makes perfect sense that Sporting wouldn’t want questions about Manchester United to take away from their last games with Amorim.

When he starts his new job next week, Amorim will definitely hope that this is not a preview of the kind of questions he will get from the British media in general.
