Mike Richards thinks that referee Andrew Madley did the right thing by only showing Jan Bednarek a yellow card when Everton lost to Southampton 1-0 on Saturday.

During Everton’s loss at St Mary’s Stadium on November 2, the Saints defender was given a yellow card for taking down Beto just outside the penalty area. There was only custodian Aaron Ramsdale left to beat.

Naturally, this choice made the travelling fans very angry, especially when Adam Armstrong scored the game-winning goal nine minutes later, giving Russel Martin’s team all three points.

Richards said on BBC’s Match of the Day on October 2: “I get why he’s not happy [Sean Dyche], but there’s cover around.” He is there, Harwood-Bellis. The yellow card choice is the right one.

Additionally, Joe Hart said, “I agree.” It looks like Harwood-Bellis will get through.

Everton lost to Southampton, which was a blow.

When going to the south coast, the Toffees should have been clear favourites, but with how the season has been going so far, a loss is not the biggest surprise.

The Saints beat Dyche’s team by a small margin, which was what many experts thought would happen. They are now off the bottom of the Premier League table.

Even though they have now lost their fifth straight game, the team seems to be putting off what is going to happen after Beto’s goal in the 94th minute against Fulham.

Dyche has every reason to be angry about the choice to only warn Bednarek. Still, the Toffees shouldn’t have relied on a single moment to beat a team that was in danger of going down.

They were good enough to win all three points at St. Mary’s Stadium, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Dwight McNeil, Iliman Ndiaye, and Jesper Lindstrom all had trouble scoring, so it wasn’t their day.

A trip to West Ham next week will be an exciting one for the Toffees, and Dyche will have another chance to make things right after their 1-0 loss to Southampton.
