Brentford lost to Manchester United 2-1.
Manchester United got back to winning ways with a much-needed win over Brentford at Old Trafford thanks to a beautiful goal by Alejandro Garnacho and a cool finish by Rasmus Højlund.
The manager of the Red Devils, who is under fire, called rumors about his future “fairy tales” and “lies.” He did this before a game that his team really needed to win because they had the worst start to a Premier League season ever after seven games.
Brentford was on track for their first Old Trafford win since 1937 after Ethan Pinnock’s header in stoppage time in the first half, but goals from Garnacho and Højlund won a 2-1 win and their first win in any competition in a month.
The Red Devils had not won in five games and were about to lose their third straight league game at home when Pinnock scored from a corner after Matthijs de Ligt was taken off again with a cut head.
Even though the officials followed the rules, there was a feeling of unfairness that may have helped United get off to a great start in the second half when Garnacho scored from Marcus Rashford’s great cross in the 47th minute.
United looked re-energized, and in the 62nd minute, Højlund scored with a cool finish after Bruno Fernandes’ clever flick put him behind Mark Flekken. It was United’s third Premier League win of the season.
The game might have been different if Brentford’s super starters had scored their latest early goal just 145 seconds in, but Kevin Schade missed a great pass.
Bryan Mbeumo hit the post with a shot that went wide before United’s already hurt defense took another hit when De Ligt headed Schade’s knee and got attention.
The defender was treated, and the game went on fairly. In the 21st minute, Brentford had a scare that they were going to lose.
When Lisandro Martinez, who was playing left back, glanced a header on goal, Flekken flapped, and Brentford’s goalie had to act quickly to stop Højlund’s bundled effort from going over the line.
United was now in the lead after Andre Onana saved a powerful shot from Christian Nørgaard. Garnacho was then denied, and Christian Eriksen’s blushes were saved after he went over.
Then there were a lot of chances, including one that Garnacho missed after Rashford found him beautifully.
This season, United’s lack of teeth has cost them, and they were punished in the last few seconds of the first half when De Ligt’s head injury left them with only 10 players while doctors tried to stop the blood.
Because of this, referee Sam Barrott took him out of the game again. Mikkel Damsgaard then took a corner kick, and Pinnock easily beat Diogo Dalot to score with a shot.
De Ligt was furious, and as the officials walked down the hallway, they were booed.
The United team came back from the break hungry and tied the game within two minutes of the restart.
Rashford, who was very good, sent a great cross from the right side to the far post, where Garnacho hit a crashing shot that went past Flekken and made Old Trafford go crazy.
After scoring the goal, the 20-year-old picked up the ball on the left, cut inside, and hit a fast shot that Flekken had to push wide of the post.
Prior to Fernandes’s shot going into the ground and across the goal, Casemiro tried his luck, and the captain soon saw a driving effort saved by Flekken.
They played a lot, and the Portuguese player’s smart touch gave United the lead in the 62nd minute.
Eriksen sent a pass forward to Fernandes, and his flick through allowed Højlund to sneak past Flekken with a clever pass.
When United tried to end the game, Casemiro shot wide, Garnacho took another shot, and Brentford’s goalie spread out to stop Dalot from adding another.
That missed chance gave Brentford hope, and in stoppage time, replacement Fabio Carvalho shot wide. For the last kick of the game, Fernandes made Flekken save.
