Romelu Lukaku laughs off the things people said about him at Manchester United and Chelsea
When Romelu Lukaku played in the Premier League, he was criticized. He said that a false story was told and that people did not understand how he played in England.
The Belgian has played for Chelsea, Manchester United, Everton, and West Brom in the Premier League. He is now with Napoli in Serie A.
His time in England was up and down, but he did score 121 goals in 278 Premier League games, which is a good record.
During his time in England, the 31-year-old feels like he was unfairly criticized and that people made opinions about him that were not challenged and were not true.
“The story has always been that as a football player, you don’t respond when someone says something bad about you.” I got caught up in it, and everyone else did too,’ Lukaku told Friends of Sports.
“He’s lazy, he doesn’t work hard, he’s not a leader, he’s selfish, first touch, he can’t hold a ball, blah blah blah,” I remember hearing that when I was in England.
“He’s the best player in the world, top five!” I said to him when I played for two years at Inter Milan.
Although Lukaku feels that too many people expected him to be the new Didier Drogba when he first joined Chelsea in 2011, the two forwards play in different ways.
“People in England wanted to lock me up,” he said. “When they see someone built like me, they think he’s the next Drogba, and they are expecting me to do the same things Didier did.”
I am not like that. Because Didier was farther away from the goal, he could keep the ball regardless of where it came from. That wasn’t my style, buddy. Play me in, and let me make my run in behind the ball.
The Belgian forward is now playing for Napoli in Italy. This is his third Serie A team, after playing for Inter and Roma.
Antonio Conte’s team has had a great start to the season. After seven games, Napoli is in first place in Serie A, and Lukaku has scored three goals in five games.
Along with Lukaku, Conte led Inter to victory in the Serie A title in 2021, and the Italian is thrilled to be working with the Belgian again.
Within the past month, Conte stated, “I have always said that I wanted Romelu at Inter; I had also asked for him at Chelsea before he went to Manchester United, because he is an unusual striker.”
Although he is very big and strong, he is also very good at running forward quickly. His state is still far from perfect, but he becomes very important to us.
