Everton
Oriol Mangala’s performance for Belgium has given Everton manager Sean Dyche a hard time when it comes to choosing players.
On Monday (October 14), Belgium lost 2-1 to France in the Nations League. Orel Mangala had a bad game for Belgium.
On Monday night, these two European enemies played each other. The score may make it look like the game was close, but it wasn’t even close.
After having a tough game in Brussels, Mangala came on to start the game but was taken off in the 67th minute.
Everton’s picking problem kept Sean Dyche busy.
The game Mangala played gave the manager a different problem to solve than the one he was looking for when the players were on form.
As reported by Florian Plettenberg on August 27, Mangala joined Everton on loan in the summer, but the Toffees have the opportunity to buy him for £33.7 million if they want to.
Idrissa Gueye’s showing for Belgium on Monday was called a “disaster” by the local media. This means that Dyche has to deal with two midfielders who aren’t playing well.
The game ended in the 67th minute for Mangala because he had only 23 touches of the ball, which is fewer than all but Lois Openda in Belgium’s starting lineup.
He was able to keep his pass accuracy at 100%, but none of the 18 passes he tried were expected to be important.
The playmaker tried to get into battles in the air but failed, and he only won 40% of the ground battles he tried.
He also lost the ball once and only made two stops.
That being said, he did clear the ball once and stop an opponent’s pass once, but overall, it was clear that he didn’t do very well.
Recently, Dyche has put Mangala in the team, but his performance for Belgium must have been a worry. Because of this, Dyche may have to make a change for this weekend’s game against Ipswich (19 October).
Tim Iroegbunam was signed over the summer for about £10 million [Fabrizio Romano, 21 June]. He looked good at the beginning of the season but has been on the bench for the last three games.
He might choose to bring the 21-year-old back into the team to fight the Tractor Boys.
