According to Franci Hutchison, the Highlands and Islands League Cup final is a significant and thrilling accomplishment for Sutherland Women.

Sutherland secured their spot in the final against Buckie, who overcame Orkney 4-0, by defeating Caithness 1-0 in the semi-finals at Castletown. Katie Grant scored the winning goal.

The final is scheduled to occur on Saturday, September 21, at a venue that has yet to be determined.

The final is the third time in four years that Sutherland has reached the final. They won the title in 2021 by defeating Clachnacuddin 3-2, but they lost in a penalty shoot-out to Buckie in 2022.

The club is exceedingly proud of its ability to reach the final once more, according to midfielder Hutchison. He is confident that they will be able to lift the trophy next month.

He stated, “It is both significant and thrilling for all individuals.”

“It serves as an effective motivator for the club, as we were previously performing well in the league but have since slowed down.” Therefore, this has provided us with a significant advantage.

“We are confident in the squad we have this year and have gained a significant amount of experience with the new recruits.”

“We defeated Buckie 1-0 in our inaugural match of the season, so if we can internalise this notion, we will be able to defeat them. There is no obstacle.”

Sutherland Women were founded in 2020 and have been among the best teams in the Highlands and Islands League since their entry.

According to Hutchison, their success has been attributed to their willingness to adjust their game and the amicable environment within the team.

She states, “It is a significant event for our community.

“Even during our away games, individuals travel to Orkney to observe us, and on Sunday, we had a substantial attendance at the semi-final in Castletown.”

“While some individuals may argue that it is merely football, for us, it represents a strong sense of camaraderie and a supportive community within the team.”

“I believe that our success is a direct result of our proactive approach to recruiting new players and fostering a welcoming environment.” We have a strong coaching network that dedicates a significant amount of time to the squad and also prioritises individual athletes. The club has benefited from this.

“We maintain the skeleton of the team by maintaining our core players each year. However, we are consistently adaptable, which keeps the other teams on their toes.”

Hutchison stated that Sutherland is eager to maintain their current level of success when they face Orkney at Helmsdale on Sunday at 1 p.m. in their return to Highlands and Islands League action.

She stated, “We are optimistic that we will have a strong crowd for this weekend’s home game, as we have a strong squad.”
