As a restricted free agent, the Grizzlies are able to retain Canarian power forward Santi Aldama by matching any offer he receives.
A qualifying offer from the Memphis franchise, worth 5.9 million euros for one season, has reportedly altered the player’s market situation, according to Michael Scotto of Hoopshype.
Even though he is a free agent after finishing his rookie contract and fourth season, the 24-year-old still has certain constraints on his future.
It appears improbable that he will take the Grizzlies’ modest offer, remain with the team for another season, and then become a free agency in the summer of 2019.
Other teams are showing interest as well; the Pistons are the first to surface. If Memphis were to match whatever offer he received, he could remain on the roster.
Aldama is in his fourth year in the NBA, and he has been a solid contributor off the bench and in starting roles.
He has played 25.5 minutes per game and averaged 12.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists on 48.3 percent shooting from the field and 36.8 percent from outside the arc.
Many teams are interested in acquiring him because of his versatility on offensively and his position on defense.
According to journalist Zach Lowe, some of them, such as the aforementioned Pistons, could use an exception for non-taxpaying franchises, which is estimated to be worth just over $14 million for the 2025-26 season. The deal could be for up to four years with salary increases of 5% for each year.
The Grizzlies didn’t extend Aldama’s deal when they had the chance last season because they are waiting for Jaren Jackson Jr. to be renewed.
The Spaniard played well, which has made him more valuable on the market. In this case, it doesn’t mean that neither person wants to keep the friendship going.
It’s very likely to happen, but Memphis would have to spend a lot of money to match some of the big deals the Spanish player gets.
If not, he will be going somewhere else in the NBA. The player recently told friends and family of his school, “No matter where I am, I want us to be a team that fights for the ring.”
