When Imagine Dragons step off the stage, they don’t just leave the lights and roaring crowds behind—they carry with them a mission far more powerful than the echo of their chart-topping anthems. That mission lives on through the Tyler Robinson Foundation (TRF), a nonprofit launched in 2013 and named in honor of a young fan whose courage would inspire a global movement.

More than a charitable extension, the foundation is deeply embedded into the band’s identity, with the members—Dan Reynolds, Wayne Sermon, Ben McKee, and Daniel Platzman—acting not only as musical icons but also as full-hearted philanthropists. Their ownership of TRF isn’t corporate—it’s personal.

The Origin Story: A Fan Who Changed Everything

The story begins with Tyler Robinson, a spirited teenager from Utah who found strength in Imagine Dragons’ breakout song “It’s Time” while undergoing treatment for a rare form of cancer. Tyler’s resilience and positivity left a profound impact on the band when they met him backstage at a concert in 2011.

Just two years later, Tyler passed away at the age of 17. Deeply moved, the band partnered with the Robinson family to form the Tyler Robinson Foundation, with the goal of easing the burdens of families struggling with pediatric cancer.

Dan Reynolds has often referred to the foundation as “the most important thing we’ve done,” even more than their Grammy Award and platinum records.

A Mission of Relief and Dignity

At its core, TRF is about providing financial assistance to families of children diagnosed with cancer, particularly helping cover non-medical costs—rent, groceries, utilities, and transportation—that often become overwhelming during treatment. The average cost of a child’s cancer journey can reach tens of thousands of dollars, much of it not covered by insurance.

By 2025, the foundation has served over 2,500 families across the United States and beyond, distributing millions of dollars in direct aid. These are not anonymous transactions; the TRF team, along with the band, often engage with families, sharing their stories and amplifying their voices.

Beyond aid, TRF builds a community of strength. It connects families with others navigating similar battles and provides emotional resources—because pediatric cancer isn’t just a medical battle, it’s a life-altering storm.

Gala Nights, Zero-G Flights, and Generous Hearts

TRF’s impact is fueled by creativity and generosity—true to Imagine Dragons’ nature. Each year, they host the “Rise Up Gala”, a dazzling charity event held in Las Vegas. It blends celebrity performances, auction experiences, and family testimonials into an evening of hope.

The 2024 gala raised over $3.2 million. Attendees watched performances from the band and surprise guests, but the true highlight was a $100,000 pledge Dan Reynolds made live on stage—matched immediately by donors in the crowd.

The foundation also embraces unique fundraising methods. In 2023, Imagine Dragons partnered with Omaze to raffle off a Zero Gravity flight experience with the band, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars while offering fans an unforgettable adventure.

Each effort reflects TRF’s ethos: support can be inspiring, joyful, and deeply impactful.

The Band’s Hands-On Involvement

Unlike many celebrity-driven foundations, TRF is not just a namesake project. The band members actively sit on the board, participate in strategy meetings, and work closely with the executive director and staff. They’ve visited families, attended funerals, celebrated victories, and used their massive platform to advocate for pediatric cancer awareness and research.

In interviews, bassist Ben McKee has emphasized the need to go “beyond the check.” “It’s about standing with families, not just funding them. We want them to know they’re seen, heard, and never alone.”

Dan Reynolds, who himself has spoken openly about battling depression and ankylosing spondylitis, believes that emotional honesty is key to TRF’s resonance. “Tyler taught us what it means to be brave. The foundation is how we keep his light alive—and how we remind the world that there’s strength in vulnerability.”

10 Years and Growing Stronger

As TRF marks over a decade of service in 2025, it continues to grow—adding new partnerships, expanding internationally, and investing in long-term solutions like family housing support and post-treatment care.

Plans are in place to launch a TRF Family Resource Center in Las Vegas by 2026—a physical hub for support, counseling, and respite. The foundation is also exploring educational scholarships for survivors and siblings.

Yet, for all its ambition, TRF remains grounded in the values Tyler lived by: joy, courage, and the power of connection.

From arena stages to hospital rooms, Imagine Dragons are proving that rock and roll can heal—not just hearts, but whole families. The Tyler Robinson Foundation stands as a testament to music’s ability to move mountains—and to the band’s unwavering belief that even the darkest journeys can be illuminated by hope.
